We'll hit the road again... It's really happening, another dream comes true: We'll cycle Iceland!!
THE RAD RACE x AURORA TOUR D'ICELAND
JULY 23rd - 31st 2015
We have dreamed about cycling Iceland for many years and it was a big goal for us to ride there someday. These thoughts have now become true. It's gonna be part 1 of 2 farewell rides that we will do for our beloved friend Sebastian who died in a fucking cycling accident a few weeks ago. Sebastian and Aurora and some RAD PACK members were planning this quickly after our Tour de Skandinavia. It was pretty clear for us that we need to plan some other epic trips because this is what we love: travel and cycle and just explore new countries and cities on our bikes.
So we started thinking about it and the first thing we did was to talk to Bombtrack because we just needed some awesome bikes since the whole idea is to travel on crossers so we are independent and can ride in the highlands. Bombtrack was superfriendly and will now lend us 8 bikes that we will use for the estimated 500k.
The Arise for example "is like a Swiss Army Knife, tough, dependable and versatile. The larger tire clearance and rack mounts mean this bike can be anything from a single speed commuter, CX racer, or even an off-road travel bike." That's exactly what we need!! We will pack these into our Evoc travel bags and then we're off...
We are sooo looking forward to check out these amazing bikes!!! We know for sure that the 8 Bombtrack bikes will bring us as far as we can possibly ride. The plan is to ride as much as we can, at least 500k in 6 stages. But since the weather cannot be predicted, even in July, we just don't know what to expect... The tires and tubes will come from Vredestein who also support our races and our team with some excellent stuff! Thanks so much!
After the bikes were cleared we talked to one of the most amazing photographers out there who luckily happens to know us already since he shot one of our races last year. So he knows what to expect from 8 crazy people... We called Lars Schneider if he could imagine to go on a trip with us through the highlands of iceland. And fuck yes: he's in!!! So Lars will capture our trip and take some epic pics. We will post his pics and our tour diary everyday on the trip in our BLOG so you can just live the epxerience with us.
Nex thing we needed was some awesome tents to live in for 8 days... This was an easy one since we're super happy to have teamed up with Heimplanet. These dudes from Hamburg are really producing the best tents in the whole world and we cannot be happier to call these tents home in Iceland. We cannot stress enough that Heimplanet is exactly like the RAD RACE: just a couple of friends with a big dream, working from a backyard office in Hamburg. The plan is to just sleep whenever we're not capable of riding anymore. The plan is to just stay wherever we think it's beautiful... By the way: at one of our races: at the RAD RACE Last Man Standing near Hamburg on August 15th there will be a Heimplanet camping village... So you can check out these tents for yourselves!!
Finally we needed some awesome gear and so we asked our dear friend Peer Auxpeer Koch to design a team kit for us. And what a great job he did... You might know his work from the RAD RACE Fixed42 World Championship poster...
We're just so stoked to ride 500k through the highlands in the black, red and blue iceland country colours...
The biggest challenge will be the weather though so we're super happy to have Gore Bike Wear with us who support us with some amazing windstopper and rain jackets, waterproof gloves and cycling Bib shorts. Just in case... Since there won't be any supermarkets, restaurants or whatever else you might want after a crazy 100K ride we will just shop once in the beginning of the trip and then eat wherever we spend the night. Our breakfast will be MyMüsli and some fruits and our cycling nutrition will come from the mighty Clif Bars and tons of bananas. Prepared, hu?
And just in case we will face the sun or what is even more likely: tons of wind we are more than prepared, too. Our beloved partner in crime Oakley has provided the RAD PACK with shades for the trip so our eyes are well protected... so happy to have the privilege to ride these glasses!!
And here's the track. But as we said. We don't know what to expect. We just hope we'll make it as far as we can, see stuff we have never seen before and camp in the beautiful grass of Iceland. That's the plan.
And here's some more epic shots of Lars Schneider, who traveled Iceland many many years ago. We're so stoked. 9 people. 8 riders from different crews all over Germany. 1 photographer. Iceland. Stop racism - start raceism.
