Bogota - Honda.
191km, 1365m of altitude.
OK, lets do this. We are riding two options for a possible TdF4 in Colombia in 2020. This is stage 1 of the first of two routes we’re trying out.
We started early with no breakfast at 6am (and that wasn’t too late) in Bogota and left our beautiful hotel. BTW. Don’t believe the hype about Bogota or Colombia being not safe or dangerous. Just don’t behave like an idiot and you’re all good. We had 3 wonderful nights and days in the center of Bogota. The city is unlike other major capitols full of love and heartwarming people. And: they love cyclists. Up to this trip I thought Italy was the best cycling country. Well it aint no more. It’s Colombia!!
Then the first 20-30k or so were just leading us through the crazy traffic of Bogota. We will need to find a different solution for that. But spoiler alert: this tour won’t be for beginners. You gotta beat the traffic and there is no way to prevent that. But we thought it was great fun!!!
Again we met with a couple of locals that went part of the first stage with is. It’s unreal how cool these colombian riders are. Thanks for joining us. It was an honor!!
Then after we left the stressful traffic situation in Bogota after 40k or so we hit a bigger road that was also used by many other locals on their bikes. We rode with them and talked and explained what we’re doing.
The first crazy descent of the day was endless. Around 20k of downhill riding on perfect roads. Unlike the Alps or Dolomites the roads are wider and apart from some big trucks so much fun to go down.
We hit the jungle then. Seriously. This country is so green and the heat hit us and there was another steep climb in temperatures over 40 degrees celcius. The group has a perfect balance, only Carlos loves it to ride his own thing. Bit mostly he catches us on the way down anyways.
After the jungle ended we had a perfect lunch break and then we really had to fight hard on the last 50k. The sun was boiling us and we all burned pretty good. Jan, Oscar, Hendrik and myself met the major of Honda after we finished one of our top 10 rider EVER and just like in Bogota Honda is ready and excited to host the stage 1 finish of the RAD RACE TOUR DE FRIENDS 4 in Colombia. Unreal.
The hotel is insane. And tomorrow we’re starting at 5am because we will do one of the world’s most famous climbs called “Letras”. It’s an 80km(!) uphill ride.
See ya’ll tomorrow!
