THE END OF OUR DREAMS…?!?
Today changed everything. The first 3 stages are pretty much fixed. The routes are great, the city representatives love us, the plan seems to work. Until today. We have to stop dreaming about this route. This day ended what we were trying to set up… But let’s start in the beginning…
Once again we started early (we kinda have to since it’s getting dark at 6pm latest) and we absolutely wanna avoid arriving at night time. Right as we wanted to kick the 4th stage off it started to rain. Real colombian rain. Cats and Dogs rain. So we had to start the day soaked up wet. Then the group split by accident and up to this point we still thought it would all be good. Jan and Jonas rode a gravel section. Tritop, Oscar and myself took the road.
Pretty much from that point on after the first climb we were hitting one of the main traffic routes for trucks in this region of Colombia. And it was so damn ugly that it lead up to the point until one of us got a panic attack. The unbelievable noise, the closeness of those huge trucks, the road safety. Everything went crazy and nuts. We went up to more than 3.000m above sea level and the air got thinner and thinner. We made it in the end (and took the super dangerous descent that was leading us behind, in front and just next to those trucks again) but it got clear pretty fast that this is no Tour de Friends stage. It’s way too dangerous and scary and pretty much no fun at all to ride a road like this.
We got attacked by dogs, we had some serious incidents with trucks or cars and in the end we just wanted to get out of there. But it never ended. 170k of nothing. The worst ride of the tour. Now that we’re sitting here all safe we can already laugh about it. But this stage ended our dreams of a round trip from and to Bogota.
We made a new plan. Wait for it. We still got 10 more days to find two more stages for th TdF4 in 2020. I am pretty sure we will. We have 2 off days now and we’re in sure need of that. Everybody needs sleep and we wanna find a perfect route for 2020. That is still the plan.
Stay tuned. We’ll be back with a new STAGE 4.
